Hotshot Trucking Insurance (Hot Shot Coverage & Cost)

Hotshot trucking moves less-than-truckload freight fast, on Class 2 through 5 pickups and duallies, when a full semi is overkill. It is a niche with its own risks, and personal auto insurance will not touch a for-hire hotshot operation. You need a commercial policy from a trucking specialist.

Whether you spell it hotshot or hot shot, the coverage is the same, and so is what brokers and the FMCSA expect you to carry.

What hotshot truck insurance covers

  • Auto liability. Pays for bodily injury and property damage you cause to others. The FMCSA requires it on for-hire authority.
  • Physical damage. Collision and comprehensive on your dually and trailer, including theft, vandalism, and animal strikes.
  • Motor truck cargo. Covers the freight you haul under a bill of lading. See our motor truck cargo page.
  • Trailer interchange. Covers trailers you pull that you do not own, under a written interchange agreement.
  • General liability. Covers business exposures off the truck, which many contracts require.

How much does hotshot trucking insurance cost?

Hotshot insurance runs $665 to $2,085 a month ($8,000 to $25,000 a year) for one truck and trailer. An established owner-operator with a clean record sits near $665 to $1,165 a month, and a first-year authority with the full package closer to $1,250 to $1,835. Physical damage is a percentage of your equipment value, generally 3% to 12% a year. Get an exact rate for your rig and freight.

Gooseneck is the most common hotshot hitch, and along with fifth-wheel setups it has the widest carrier appetite.

CDL and non-CDL hotshot insurance

You do not always need a CDL to run hotshot. In most states a CDL is not required until your combined rig is over 26,000 lbs GVWR. For insurance, running non-CDL does not always cost you more, but some premier markets require a CDL and after about two clean years they can open up noticeably lower rates.

Hotshot insurance requirements

  • Auto liability: $750,000 to $1,000,000. The FMCSA minimum for general freight is $750,000, but most brokers require $1,000,000.
  • Cargo: $100,000. The standard broker requirement, higher if you haul automobiles or high-value freight.
  • Authority and filings. For-hire interstate hotshots need FMCSA authority and a liability filing, with or without a CDL.

Who needs hotshot insurance

  • For-hire LTL and expedited freight haulers
  • Hotshot car haulers moving one to three vehicles
  • Construction, oilfield, and equipment material haulers
  • Non-CDL operators running under 26,001 lbs GVWR
  • New ventures activating their first authority

How to get cheaper hotshot insurance

  • Run a gooseneck or fifth wheel. Wider carrier appetite usually means a better rate.
  • Get a CDL. Even when it is not required, it opens more markets and lowers the rate.
  • Keep your MVR clean. Your record is the biggest lever on price.
  • Match your cargo limit to your freight. Enough to cover the load, not more.
  • Take a higher physical damage deductible. Options run $1,000, $2,500, and $5,000.
  • Build clean experience. Rates drop after the first year of authority with no claims.

Hotshot combines fast, deadline-driven freight, smaller trucks pulling heavy loads, and a high share of newer operators, which insurers treat as higher risk.
